Renovation of the M3 metro line

The renovation of the M3 metro line in Budapest, completed in May 2023, was one of the largest investments of the European Union in the 2014-2020 programming period. The whole line was equipped with modern infrastructure that allows access to everyone to all metro stations. The renovation took place in three stages: from November 2017 to March 2019 on the northern section, between Újpest Centre and Lehel Square, followed by the section from Nagyvárad Square to Kőbánya-Kispest, and finally from November 2020 to May 2023 on the central section between Lehel Square and Nagyvárad Square. The comprehensive reconstruction of the line comprised a full electrical renovation, building a modern track structure, and the renewal of the passenger areas and stations. The reconstruction guarantees safe and modern transport for the coming decades on Hungary’s busiest railway line, which is used by more than half a million people every day.
